Our customers genuinely appreciate that, as well as the customer service that they experience from beginning to end. So, who is “the Door Store customer”? Likely it’s you, no matter where you live!

Door Store has been a fixture on the New York City retail scene for over 55 years. We weren't always called Door Store, though. Read on to find out how Door Store came to be:

Fresh out of college in 1953, two sisters, Martha and Annie, left Cincinnati, Ohio, seeking adventure in New York City. Job dissatisfaction, combined with fearless imaginations, resulted in their inventive idea: what if they were to build affordable furniture out of flush doors? Add tall legs, and you've got a table or a desk. Cut them down, and you've got a coffee table. Throw on cushions, and you've got a sofa. Throw on a mattress, and you've got a bed! From this idea, their new company, Furniture In Parts, was born.

A reporter for Look Magazine walked by their shop on 51st Street and was impressed not only with this unique concept, but also with these two entrepreneurial women. He was so influenced by them that he wrote a full feature article about their business for his magazine. The article drew so much attention that several more newspaper and magazine stories followed. Annie and Martha even appeared on national TV on Arlene Francis' morning show! In these articles their store was nick-named "Door Store", for very obvious reasons. Martha and Annie went along with it and hung a new sign outside their shop. Today the name remains.

Much has transpired since then: in 1974 Annie left for tranquil Virginia. Martha refueled her desire to provide style conscious New Yorkers with great, affordable furniture. No longer in the manufacturing business, she travelled the world focusing on buying the best quality for the best price. Today, combined with an emphasis on customer service and satisfaction, Martha's original business plan continues to be realized by two of her daughters who share her enthusiasm: to provide great quality, product and service to our customers at unbelievable prices.
